Frequently Asked Questions
When do you need to have a dental check-up?
It is wise to have your mouth checked regularly by the dentist. This way we can recognize (incipient) problems in time. After all, prevention is always better than cure. It is recommended to make an appointment with the dentist every 6 to 12 months for check-ups and dental cleaning. Even if you wear dentures, it is important to continue to see the dentist once a year minimum. The dentist not only checks your teeth and gums, but also checks whether there are any abnormalities in, for example, your tongue, lips or cheeks.
Is electric brushing better than brushing with a manual toothbrush?
Scientific research has shown that electric toothbrushes are more effective than manual toothbrushes. The electric brush makes faster and different brushing movements, which cleans the teeth better than with a manual toothbrush. During brushing, an average of 100 grams more pressure is exerted on a manual toothbrush than on an electric toothbrush. This makes manual toothbrushing more susceptible to damage to the gums, because people unconsciously put more pressure on the manual toothbrush. People often think that brushing harder cleans better, but that is not true. An electric toothbrush helps prevent gum damage because it has a built-in pressure sensor; if too much pressure is applied while brushing, it will stop or give a red signal to let you know that something has not been done correctly.
Lost 1 tooth or more, what are the consequences?
Many people find it important to replace missing teeth because of the bone loss and soft tissue loss that affect the appearance of the face.
This loss can cause functional problems, such as difficulty chewing, as well as aesthetic concerns
When a tooth or teeth are missing, the bone and gums will also disappear, directly contributing to the deterioration of facial muscles, the development of wrinkles, and an aging appearance. Additionally, the loss of a tooth can cause the surrounding muscles to begin to deteriorate.
This is because the teeth and jawbones play a key role in supporting the facial muscles. Without this support, muscles can sag, leading to wrinkles and facial aging.
In addition, missing teeth can cause changes in the way the lips and surrounding facial tissues rest, which can alter the appearance of the face. These changes can also contribute to the development of wrinkles and an aged appearance.
Preventing tooth loss and addressing missing teeth as soon as possible can help maintain the support and function of facial muscles and prevent wrinkles and an aging appearance.
Your appearance is a possible reason to have missing teeth replaced. Another reason is that the space left by a missing tooth can put pressure on the teeth on either side. A missing tooth can also affect your 'bite', which can lead to postural problems and problems at the level of the jaw joint. The remaining teeth can tilt toward the opening, which changes the way the teeth fit together. This can also lead to food and plaque getting stuck in the gap, causing tooth decay and gum disease.
